|aAlthough there has been much published on the problems of mass housing estates in Europe, there has been little work that has sufficiently clarified the presence and role of difference within and between estates. This book - based on in-depth research on nearly 30 post-Second World War housing estates across Europe - focuses on 'differentiation' to fill this gap. Revealing that estates havean array of differences in terms of characteristics, types of inhabitant, positionings within the housing market, location, history of development, and context, this collection highlights characteristics and processes hitherto overlooked or under-emphasised, to show how a better understanding of the functioning of postwar housing estates can be developed. Ultimately this could leadto improved policy responses, which will go beyond the classic emphasis on physical restructuring.
